Inside A Cotton Boll

The other day we discovered a cotton boll lying on the deck.  So, we decided to use this opportunity as a teachable moment.  We cut the boll in half and took a look inside.

At this stage, the cotton boll is filling up with cellulose (in layers) as the cotton boll matures.

The University of Maryland Extension site has more information on cotton boll development.
